What to expect at your first bridal appointment: A survival guide
Picture this: You’re sitting on your couch, ring shining brighter than your future mother-in-law’s opinions, scrolling through endless bridal gowns online. Suddenly, it hits you – you have no idea what to actually expect at your first bridal appointment. Don’t worry, I’ve been there. My first appointment? Let’s just say it involved a minor meltdown in the dressing room, a gown that resembled a cupcake, and consultants that were nowhere to be found (before Say Yes To The Dress was a thing)
So, before you dive headfirst into a pile of tulle and lace, let’s talk about what to expect at your first bridal appointment. (Spoiler alert: It’s not all champagne and giggles… but there will be champagne.)
1. Come Prepared, but Not Too Prepared
Yes, Pinterest boards are great, and yes, we love that you’ve binge-watched every season of Say Yes to the Dress. But keep an open mind. That mermaid gown you’ve been eyeing might not be as comfy as it looks (trust me, you’ll want to breathe at your wedding).
2. The Entourage Dilemma
Bringing your entire bridal party sounds like fun until you realize everyone has very strong opinions. Aunt Karen thinks you need more sparkle, your bestie wants you in something modern, and your mom is already crying. Choose your squad wisely. Less is more. And remember if you dont have any family to bring, you will leave your appointment with atleast 5 new chosen family members. Bridal staff are well versed in an array of dynamics. Supporting you every step of the way, we step in as your adopted family.
3. The Unexpected Workout
Trying on wedding dresses is basically a full-body workout. You’ll be stepping in, shimmying up, and sucking in. Your consultant will become your new best friend, helping you zip, clip, and fluff your dress into perfection. Pro tip: Wear comfy underwear and even with your nerves, try and eat a small meal before the champagne is served. Cheers.
4. The Moment of Truth
When you find the one, you’ll know. Maybe you’ll cry, maybe you’ll just smile bigger than you ever have (well, compared to when you saw your ring) or maybe you’ll just whisper, “This is it.” And hey, if you don’t find the dress on the first try, no worries!
5. Budget Talks (AKA The Awkward Part)
Yes, dresses can be expensive. Yes, it’s okay to have a budget. No, your consultant won’t judge you. Be honest about what you’re comfortable spending. Have a price range for dress and accessories, and dont forget about TAX! Precious moments can be ruined when there is a miscommunication on budget not only between bride and consultant, but possibly to the family member/friend offering to pay for it.
6. Expect…….the unexpected?
Eh, cliche we know, but EXPECT to surprise yourself. Expect yourself to fall in love with a dress you never thought to try on. Expect for your initial vision to change. It happens. I think brides first under estimate just how many options there really is out there. Especially if you plan on going to what I call “super stores”, Bridals by Lori, Terry Costa in Dallas, Town and Country Bridal in New Orleans, stores with 7 or more designers that have been open over a decade, have accumulated quite the collection. I would advise to trust in your consultant and NOT browse the racks. Trust the process.
6. Enjoy the Process
It’s easy to get caught up in the stress, but remember: This is supposed to be fun. Laugh at the dress that makes you look like a cupcake, take a million selfies, and soak in the moment. After all, you’re not just picking a dress, you’re creating a memory.
At Luxury Bridal Styling, I’m here to make sure your first bridal appointment is as stress-free (and fun) as possible. From picking the perfect gown to calming those pre-appointment jitters, I’ve got you covered. Now, let’s find that dress – and pop some bubbly while we’re at it!
